How to read version of Direct:

a. The first: In the Windows folder of the boot drive, open the System folder (for Win9x, WinMe) or System32 for Win XP.

Find files DDRAW.DLL. Click the right mouse button on the file, select Properties, select the Version tab in the dialog.
In the File Version line you will read in the sequence of numbers corresponding version of DirectX using:

July 1 DirectX 4.07.01.3000
4.8.0.400 DirectX 8.0
5.1.2600.1106 DirectX 8.1
4.09.00.900 DirectX 9.0

Each version of Windows has a version of DirectX, respectively. With Win98 is DirectX6.1; WinMe, Win2000 is DirectX7.1; WinXP is DirectX8.0 and 8.1.
