Multilinks Split Second TV: Arctic Void S01E01

Split Second! produced by Engel Brothers

Disaster strikes quickly and indiscriminately, there's no time to think and barely enough time to act. The simplest choice may prove fatal, or it could save your life... how do you know which choice is the right one?Split Second! dives into the details of disaster and the science behind them to present an investigation of the critical choices made when one's world turns upside down. Renowned survival specialist Brian Horner takes us on two one-hour journeys where we re-live horrifying catastrophes and discover how making the right choices can help people escape from the jaws of death, and in a twist on the survival theme, Brian shares in the victim's horror by placing himself in the very same predicaments - from a free-fall into a crevasse to an escape from a capsized ship. There, we rewind the action, backtracking to the critical choice points: what were the decisions the victim made or didn't make and what were the consequences? Who survives and who doesn't? And how does psychology sometimes determine the difference? The victims' stories in Split Second are told through extensive recreations and cutting-edge graphics. High-octane stunts and special effects up the ante...

In this episode of Split Second! we interweave two dramatic tales involving deadly crevasses.

In the first story, Canadian mounties Ken Putnam and Kirk Gale are on snowmobile patrol in one of Canada's enormous national parks. They leave familiar territory in pursuit of snowmobile tracks, thinking that someone may be in trouble ahead. What they don't know is that they've have driven off solid mountain and onto an unstable glacier. They stop at the top of a slope and Kirk walks ahead to investigate the snow conditions. Meanwhile, Ken, a hobbyist photographer, is struck by the beautiful scenery and gets off his snowmobile to take a picture. He pulls out his camera, removes his gloves and takes one step, another step, and on the third step plunges into a small opening in the ice.

Clawing his bare hands into the ice and snow, he manages to stop his free fall. But only his head and arms remain above the surface. Ken holds himself up long enough for Kirk to respond to his frantic cries for help. But Kirk's grip on Ken is tenuous. And as Ken's legs flail away searching for a foothold in the void beneath him, their grip fails and Ken drops 90 feet into the blackness below. Ken's blood-curdling scream fades to silence as his friend and colleague looks on in horror. Kirk manages to escape the crevasse field to get help, but it may be a futile effort.

In the other story, Melody Wyman and Charles "Roddy" Grubbs are both outdoors enthusiasts, but novice climbers. That doesn't stop them from planning a mountain top wedding on the icy flanks of Washington's imposing Mount Rainier. The couple-to-be searched far and wide to find a guide like Kurt Wedberg, a world-class climber and a licensed minister.

After a morning of close calls and fearing the dangers of the mountain - including avalanches, white outs, and altitude sickness - Kurt, Melody and Roddy are less than 2500 feet from the summit when Melody is blown off her feet by a gust of wind and begins to slide toward a gaping crevasse in the glacier. The three are roped together and Kurt manages to stop her fall - until Roddy loses his footing as well - sending them all barreling downward. The group tumbles 150 feet on the icy slope and hurtles 60 feet down a crevasse, where an ice ledge puts an end to their spiraling descent, their wedding - and quite possibly their lives.

We interweave both stories, dissecting the good and bad choices the victims made, and ultimately reveal who survived to tell the tale.
